Labyrinth Meditation Retreats

A Sacred, Ancient Meditation Tool

Labyrinths have been around for over 4,000 years and are found in almost every major religious tradition in the world.  They have been an integral part of many cultures such as Native American, Greek, Celtic and Mayan.  The Hopi called it the symbol for “Mother Earth” and equated it with Kiva. Like Stonehenge and the pyramids, they are magical geometric forms that define sacred space.

Today, Labyrinths are being used for reflection, meditation, prayer and comfort.  Weddings and soul departures have many wonderful ceremonies.

They are found in many sizes and shapes and are created in sand, cornmeal, flour, painted on canvas,  or  with stones, cut into turf, mounds of earth, vegetation or any other natural material. The design we chose was the seven circuit, 50 foot diameter.  This design was found on pottery 2000 years ago.

Many people make the mistake of thinking a labyrinth and a maze are the same.  A maze has dead ends.   The labyrinth has no dead ends, but only one entrance to the center and then back out again.  When you walk a labyrinth, you meander back and forth, turning 180 degrees each time you enter a different circuit.  As you shift your direction you also shift your awareness from right brain to left brain. This is one of the reasons it can induce receptive states of consciousness.  It can also help to balance the chakras.

We took great care in creating our beautiful, natural labyrinth by having the area dowsed for the best energy.  The entrance is true East to West, with a beautiful flagstone center for the altar area.

Each person’s walk is a personal experience. How one walks and what one receives differs with each walk.  You can use the walk for clearing and centering the mind, or for specific questions to be answered or concerns to be addressed.  We suggest that you clear your mind before entering and have a clear intent of why you are walking as you are going in.  At the altar, offer that up, and then as you leave concentrate on knowing and embracing the answer.  Your walk can be healing and profound each time.

The labyrinth is a tool for people of all beliefs to come together for a common spiritual experience.
